Compress a video for WhatsApp

WhatsApp recompresses videos you send in a chat, often more than it needs to. Sending a well-compressed 16 MB file yourself gives you control over how it looks and gets it there faster on mobile data.

What do you want to do?
MB

Processed on your device. Your videos are never uploaded.

Why compress before sending?

When you attach a video as media, WhatsApp re-encodes it on your phone to save bandwidth. You don’t choose the quality, and long or high-resolution clips can come out soft or smeared. A file that is already small and in a standard format is touched far less.

16 MB was WhatsApp’s long-standing limit for media and is still a good size for chat videos: it uploads in seconds on a typical mobile connection and doesn’t eat into the recipient’s data plan.

Sending longer videos

Recent versions of WhatsApp let you send much larger files by attaching the video as a document instead of as media. Documents aren’t recompressed, but the recipient has to download and open them separately rather than watching inline.

If your clip is several minutes long, raise the target size to 50 MB or more and send it as a document, or trim it to the part you want to share.

Portrait videos

Phone videos are usually vertical. ClipFit keeps the original orientation and aspect ratio. The resolution setting refers to the short side, so 720p means 720×1280 for a vertical clip.

Private by design

ClipFit processes your video inside your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded, so there’s no waiting for transfers and no copy left on a server. Once you close the tab, nothing remains.

Questions

What’s WhatsApp’s video size limit?

It depends on how you send it. Videos sent as documents can be very large, while videos sent as media are compressed by the app. Check WhatsApp’s help centre for the current limits on your version.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. ClipFit runs in mobile Chrome and Safari. Processing is slower than on a computer, so short clips work best.

Will the video still have sound?

Yes. Audio is kept and re-encoded as AAC, which WhatsApp supports on every platform.
