Compress a video for Discord

Discord’s free upload limit is 10 MB per file. Drop in your clip and ClipFit will shrink it to fit, keeping the sound and as much detail as the size allows.

How much video fits in 10 MB?

File size is bitrate multiplied by length, so the longer the clip, the less detail each second can have. As a rough guide, 10 MB holds about 30 seconds at a sharp 720p, a minute at a watchable 480p, or around two minutes at low quality.

ClipFit works this out for you. It reads the length of your video, calculates the bitrate that will land just under 10 MB, and lowers the resolution when the bitrate gets too small for 1080p to look clean. Lower resolution at a decent bitrate almost always looks better than full HD at a starved one.

Tips for better-looking results

Trim before you compress. Cutting a two-minute recording down to the 30 seconds that matter gives each second four times as much data.

Gameplay with lots of motion, grass, smoke or confetti needs more bitrate than a talking head or a screen recording. If a fast clip looks blocky, cut it shorter or choose 480p.

If you have Nitro, raise the target size to match your plan. The tool accepts any size up to 500 MB.

Why the file isn’t exactly 10 MB

Encoders can’t hit an exact size, so ClipFit aims about 5% under the target and checks the result. If it still comes out too big, it re-encodes at a lower bitrate, up to three times. You’ll never get a file over the limit marked as finished.

Private by design

ClipFit processes your video inside your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded, so there’s no waiting for transfers and no copy left on a server. Once you close the tab, nothing remains.

Questions

Will Discord embed the compressed video?

Yes. The output is an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, which Discord plays inline on desktop, web and mobile.

My video is already under 10 MB. What happens?

If it’s already an MP4 that Discord can play, ClipFit leaves it untouched and tells you. Other formats are converted and kept under the limit.

Is 10 MB the same as 10 MiB?

No, and that difference trips people up. ClipFit uses decimal megabytes (10,000,000 bytes), which is the stricter of the two, so the result fits either way.

Can I compress several clips at once?

Yes. Select up to 20 files and they’ll be processed one after another, each with its own download button.
